Philodendron Black Cardinal
With its color-changing foliage, the Philodendron 'Black Cardinal' or Blushing Cardinal as it is sometimes known, is a great addition to any room. Originating from South America, it produces large oval leaves that turn from dark red to green and eventually almost black as they mature. Even though tropical, the botanically named Philodendron erubescens 'Black Cardinal' can grow well as a houseplant and is relatively easy to care for.
This houseplant grows best when it is kept warm at a temperature of 65 – 80°F. Disliking extreme temperature fluctuations, it is important not to place this plant near an air-conditioning vent or hot radiator. The Black Cardinal Philodendron happily grows in average indoor humidity conditions, although if grown in a dry atmosphere it will benefit from being misted with water regularly. Although pruning is rarely necessary, any dead or damaged leaves can be cut away at the base of the stem.
Prefers to be grown in moist, but well-drained soil. Disliking an overly wet or waterlogged soil, this plant only requires watering when the top layer of soil has dried out. When watering, it is best to water thoroughly and let any excess water drain away from the soil. During the colder months, growth can slow and watering can be reduced.
